FAQs

1. Where is the "print me" folder?

The "print me" folder contains a one page document entitled "fieldnotes" and a "hike" folder. Fieldnotes is a one page "take-along" guide that prompts you to note the plant features that will enable you to look them up in "Quick Key." This is very useful for getting started in wildflower identification. The "hike" folder contains copies of the text associated with the14 hikes described in the program. These files have been saved in interchange (RTF) format that can be printed from most word processing applications on either platform.

For reasons beyond our control the hike folder is invisible on many PCs (MAC users should not experience any problems). To compensate for this errror the files can downloaded here.

Download the files by clicking on the

links below and open them from your word processor:

2. Can I print the flower pictures?

Yes! There are two ways to do this:

a) Take a screen shot (to print a page of thumbnails or a photo with associated text).
On a PC. Press Alt+print screen keys. This saves the current screen contents to the clipboard. Open your favorite paint program e.g. photoshop or paint shop pro; open a new document and then paste the contents of the clipboard. You can then crop, resize or otherwise manipulate the image and print from that program.
On a Mac. Press command+shift+3. You will here a click and the screen contents will be saved to your hard drive as a PICT file entitled "picture 1" (2, 3 etc). Quit "wildflowers" and open the saved image in your favorite paint program such as photoshop - modify at will and print.

b) You can access the flower images directly from your paint program by going to the media folder on the CD. Images are organized by family in folders named by the first 4 letters of the family name. The image files are named (usually) by the first 2 letters of the family name, the next 3 letters the genus name and the last three the species name.

Note: The photos are designed for screen observation at 72 dpi. You will get the best print results if you increase the resolution to 144 dpi or greater, thereby reducing the final size of the image.

NOTE: The content of this CD is copyrighted and is not to be used for commercial purposes

3. When I try to run wildflowers I get a dialog box saying that "Wildflowers needs at least 3MB virtual memory to run."

Ironically you only get this message on PCs running NT based versions of windows when there is over 500MB RAM and consequently a very large virtual memory.

To fix this you actually need to reduce the virtually memory as follows: From the start menu go successively to settings / control panel / system. Click on the advanced tab in the system menu: Thence to performance / virtual memory change. Assign say 200 MB to both initial and maximum VM size. Unfortunately for other purposes you probably will want to go back to a larger VM. This is a glitch in the parent program, Macromedia Director, and there is snothing much we can do about it until we issue an updated version of wildflowers.
